Analyzing Assessment Data (Health, Medicine, Nursing Essay)

Essay Instructions:

Assessment data is a tool instructors can use to determine if students are meeting course or learning outcomes. Assessments can be utilized in many ways, such as student practice, student self-assessment, determining readiness, determine grades, etc. The purpose of this assignment is to analyze sample test statistics to determine if student learning has taken place.

To address the questions below in this essay assignment, you will need to use sample statistics provided in the textbooks. For Questions 1-4, use the sample test statistics in Chapter 24 of Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty. For Questions 5-9, use Chapter 11 in The Nurse Educator's Guide to Assessing Learning Outcomes.

In a 1,000-1,250 word essay, use the sample statistics data from the textbooks to respond on the following questions:

Explain what reliability is. Based on the sample statistics, is this test reliable? What evidence from the statistics supports your answer?
What trends are seen in the raw scores? How would an instructor use this information?
What is the range for this sample? What information does the range provide and why is it important?
What information does the standard error of measurement provide? Based on the data provided, does the test have a small or large standard error of measurement? How would an instructor use this information?
Explain the process of analyzing individual items once an instructor has analyzed basic concepts of measurement.
If one of the questions on the exam had a p value of 0.76, would it be a best practice to eliminate the item? Justify your answer.
If one of the questions on the exam has a negative PBI for the correct option and one or more of the distractors have a positive PBI, what information does this give the instructor? How would you recommend the instructor adjust this item?
Based on the sample statistics, has student learning taken place? Justify your answer with data.
Based on the sample statistics, what steps would you take to improve learning?

Analyzing Assessment Data
In statistics, reliability refers to the comprehensive consistency of a particular measurement. In this regard, a measure is believed to be very reliable if it produces certain results under certain consistent conditions. This trait is usually observed on a set of certain tests connected to the number of random errors from the process of measurement included in the scores. When their high reliability in a particular statistical outcome implies that the scores are precise, consistent, and can be reproduced when the same procedure is followed. This is important when generalizing outcome from a sample to the whole population. Whenever the testing process is repeated, a similar outcome is obtained as long as the data is from the same population.
As we have seen, testing is done for various reasons. There is a need to establish before how the test will be utilized. Whenever an established test procedure is used, it is essential to understand the reliability and validity, including the test's different metrics. This is important because the test's outcome has great implications on the conclusion or analysis of the aspect under investigation. In this regard, when we consider the sample statistics presented in the chapter, we can say that the test is reliable. The evidence of the reliability is hinged on the consistency and valid outcomes that align with the proposed procedure for testing. Testing is very logical and produces results that can be proved and a realistic representation of the sample's happenings. The main tests that were undertaken include readiness, placement, formative, diagnostic, and summative. All these are important because they assist in identifying the measures that can be used to establish whether the process is valid or not. There is a criterion attached to each set of tests and is very effective in measuring a particular aspect's mastery. With regard to the statistical tests, it is important to note when the mean, median, and mode are equal. Then it implies that the test is reliable and consistent. The raw scores are decreasing as we move downward. The mean score is 50, which means the distribution is normal, hence the reliability.
The range for the sample is 21. When you have a data set, the range gives the difference between the maximum and minimum value. The two values, maximum and minimum, are the most important values of the data set. In statistics, the range offers insights on how the data set is varied and spread. Other important features of the data set are the center of the data and the data's spread. The center is usually measured using various approaches, which include the mean, median, and mode. The range is a very crude approach in measuring the ...
