The report is for an interview with a healthcare leader on the new technology that he selected, planned for and implemented in their medical facility with the assistance of his healthcare team. The healthcare leader is in charge of the acquisition of new technology, training and development of staff, supervision, and the implementation and evaluation of new healthcare technology. The new medical technology implemented by the healthcare leader is the electronic healthcare records (EHR) which has been useful in managing data and improving the care outcomes of the patient at the healthcare facility. Focus on healthcare information technology and the application of EHR have also increased significantly as a result of the healthcare providers’ effort to lower healthcare costs, reduce and eliminate medical errors, transform strategies communication and information sharing, and effectively coordinate the provision of high-quality healthcare (Kruse et al., 2016). Healthcare leaders are expected to embrace the new healthcare information technology to improve the quality of service provision. Effective healthcare leadership involves identifying, selecting, and implementing healthcare technology that may substantially produce desirable outcomes. Additionally, leaders determine the potential barriers to the successful implementation of healthcare technology for improvement. This report focuses on the selection, planning, and implementation of electronic healthcare records (EHR) based on an interview with a healthcare leader who implemented the EHR system.
Selection of Electronic Healthcare Records (EHR)
Healthcare leaders should understand the types of EHR systems available in the marketplace and the benefits and risks that accompany the selection and use of each type. EHR systems are primarily classified based on where data is stored and where the server is located (Neal, 2011). EHR technology can either be physician/facility-hosted or remotely hosted depending on the location of the servers and the strategy of managing patient data. If a healthcare leader selects facility/ physician-hosted EHR technology the healthcare organization is expected to purchase EHR hardware and software including the servers of the acquired system. Selecting a physician-hosted EHR allows the healthcare organization to be in possession of its patient data. The manufacturer and EHR technology vendors can also provide a special for activating and disabling the software based on the healthcare organization’s needs.
