Christian perspective of the nature of spirituality and ethics in contrast to the perspective of postmodern relativism within health care.
Christianity and healthcare are usually quite connected. This is because there is a close link between spirituality and health. Both focus on the aspect of the wholeness of the body. It is quite normal to see various symbols from Christianity being used in the health sector to represent something. These symbols include the cross or a serpent on a pole. Through Christianity, ethical standards in healthcare get established and even observed consequentially. Therefore, embracing a Christian worldview in applying spirituality in the healthcare sector is considered a requirement and a norm.
Christianity notes that spirituality is the lens through which humankind understands God in its approach to the nature of ethics and spirituality. God is taken as omnipresent, omniscient, and everlasting from this understanding. He is above everything else in the universe and, therefore, human health or physical deficiencies. Such a belief system opens the door to the Christian worldview. These, in turn, add up to essentially give life some meaning. As Christians go ahead and make decisions about their lives, the final word will always come from God (Igboin, 2015). They will, therefore, always remain grounded in what is expected of them from a spiritual perspective since there is only one truth.
On the other hand, postmodern relativism offers quite a different interpretation, noting that everything depends on perspective. In other terms, everything is relative. It is a worldview that provides quite a liberal understanding of spirituality, placing God’s existence and the concept of spirituality in balance (Smith, 2014). When it comes to healthcare, postmodern relativism contends that healing and recovery come from internal divination and not the outside. It, therefore, discards the notion that healing is a work of external divine power. To this end, the example of the physician and nurses who offer to assist patients in their healing process further justifies this notion (Choi, 2016). The role of these professionals is to provide the body of the patient with the favorable conditions needed to push the body into performing self-repair and recovery.
Scientism and two of the main arguments against it.
Scientism can be defined as a school of thought that strictly believes in science as the only path through which can beings can understand nature (Sorell, 2013). It, therefore, takes a stand on hard sciences being the only reliable source of information due to their ability to utilize experiments and observations to get findings. Compared to these hard sciences, soft sciences are considered weak or simply an intermediate form of science since their application greatly depends on simple forms of observation and argumentation. Scientism has been a steadily growing worldview, given that there has been an increase in scientific inventions and explanations of phenomena in scientific terms (Sorell, 2013).
