Biggest Personal Challenge
The biggest personal challenge that lowers my confidence in being able to enact the solution to the moral problem at hand is a lack of belief in myself to successfully voice and act upon what I believe to be true. This challenge is mentally taxing and could prove overwhelming if a person does not have a reliable team of people to champion similar views. Gentile (2011) notes that a lack of belief in oneself and skills to pursue a moral goal renders one’s efforts futile because of distorted focus. Gentile is quick to warn that focus ought to be on one’s position and less on any pressures and opposition to the goal at hand. Hannah, Bruce, and May (2011) acknowledge that, at times, a person can feel inadequate or less confident to approach an issue. For me, I am well aware of my capabilities in trying to attain change within my organization; however, I know that I also suffer from self-doubt and the uncertainties of my future because of the unseen repercussions of my position in the matter at hand.
Counter-Argument
Ethics and morals should never take a break in society. If something is wrong, it can never be deemed right because of convenience. For example, if I am wrong, the same rules should apply. Therefore, even in the matter at hand, ethics and morals should not take a rest because of the company’s big name.
It is intimidating to take on one’s organization, especially one whose magnitude is that of Alphabet, with a market capitalization of more than $1.6 trillion. However, I’m encouraged by Hannah, Bruce, and May (2011), who have successfully introduced the term moral conation. In their study, the researchers define the term noting that it represents the idea of taking a moral action even in the face of intimidation and adversity. While seeking to give values a voice, one must not concede their position if at all they have not seen any lasting change. While working at any organization, the goal must always be to leave a place better, and therefore, if at all one’s actions could have them at loggerheads with the organization, then, by all means, they should stand their ground.
