Understanding the differences between different diseases is important for any future healthcare professional. It allows him to have a clear grasp of the causes, symptoms, and treatments for various diseases, which helps increase the timeliness and the effectivity of the said treatment. Accordingly, one of the most common illnesses that might present in one’s future practice are migraine headache and tension headache. Although both illnesses could present as pain that is felt in one’s head, its manifestations and treatment could very significantly.
Tension and migraine headache differs in terms of its causes and demographic presentations.
On the one hand, Migraine headaches are caused by the inflammation of blood vessels and nerves located in the head, thereby causing pain usually in the neck and scalp regions. Studies show that these kinds of headache usually start from the age of puberty, and mostly affects adults 35-45 years old globally. Between sexes, it is also reported to be more common for women (2:1 ratio) since it can be triggered by hormonal imbalances in the body CITATION Wor16 \l 1033 (World Health Organization, 2016).
In terms of presentation, migraine headaches are usually felt as a throbbing or pounding pain with other symptoms such as acute sensitivity to sound or light and nausea.
