Macronutrients comprise carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and are required comparatively in large amounts for good health and normal functioning of the body.Proteins, in essence, catalyze all chemical reactions in the body and regulate gene construction. Moreover, they contain major elements of cell structure, modulate the immune system, and form the main muscle component. Individual amino acids, which are elements of protein act as neurotransmitters, hormones, and regulators of several physiological processes thus boosting the performance of major organs. Carbohydrates mainly consist of fiber which is very essential for digestion, heart health and moderating blood sugar (Dustin, 2017). High fiber foods take relatively longer to break down thus keeping someone full for a longer time. Bockisch (2015) informs that fats are energy in storage. Fats are broken down to provide energy in the body. In addition, fats act as a shield for vital organs such as heart.
For one to eat a healthy diet, a balance of the three macronutrients is important. Dustin (2017) recommends a ratio of 40%carbohydrates, 40% proteins, and 20% fat. However, diets with a high intake of one macronutrient e.g. fats and low intakes of another e.g. carbs are not recomm...
