Long-Term Care Nursing
Long-term care nursing entails facilities where individuals go so that they can receive proper medical services and personal care for an extended period. In most cases, patients residing in these homes require healthcare attention so that they can recover quickly or lead comfortable lives. As such, nurses working in these facilities are required to take care of patients’ medical needs while providing social support. Some individuals residing in long-term care nursing homes are unable to perform self-care. For example, they must be bathed and fed by caregivers and may require assistance with activities of daily living. Others only require social, psychological, and emotional support in hopes of improved self-esteem and self-confidence so they can overcome their health issues. For this reason, nurses must always be on the lookout to ensure that they are giving these patients proper attention. The topic of long-term care nursing is vital since it enables people to understand the challenges that nurses encounter and how they can overcome them. Long-term medical facilities include assisted living, nursing, and skilled nursing homes. Canadian caregivers and patients, their families, or communities face various problems in long-term care nursing, which need to be addressed appropriately to avoid compromising healthcare services.
The primary challenge that Canadian long-term homes experience is the shortage of nurses. In particular, the country does not meet the threshold of caregivers required to provide medical services in these nursing homes (Smith-MacDonald et al., 2019). As such, when nurses become sick, quit work, or take leave, they are not replaced easily. Many of the problems in long-term medical facilities in Canada emanate from understaffing (Smith-MacDonald et al., 2019). Besides, the baby boomers are over 65-years-old, and the rate of birth has been declining (Smith-MacDonald et al., 2019). On that note, the number of individuals in nursing homes is increasing while that of skilled caregivers continue to decrease (Wei & Courtney, 2018). Patients, families, and communities are not contented with the services provided in long-term care homes, and they keep complaining to the staff. In some cases, they become violent when they are left unattended for an extended period. For example, some sick individuals who cannot bath or feed themselves have to stay for a long period until they find nurses to attend to them (Wei & Courtney, 2018). Consequently, nurses are overloaded with more work, which makes them unable to offer high-quality healthcare services since they are exhausted and demotivated to deal with violent residents.
The other problem in long-term care nursing in Canada is burnout due to the lack of autonomy and proper work organization (Gilster, Boltz, & Dalessandro, 2018). Since caregivers are required to offer 24-hour healthcare services, and they do not get enough time to rest due to the shortage of nurses, some of them become injured and still work in that condition (Wei & Courtney, 2018). As such, they go home exhausted physically and emotionally for taking care of many residents, some of ...
