Asthma is a respiratory disorder that commonly affects people worldwide. Even though there have been significant improvements in management and diagnosis, most people have poorly uncontrolled asthma (Di Salvo et al., 2020). Despite this, control is still possible using various pharmacological interventions such as montelukast (Singulair®), a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA).
Montelukast is an effective treatment in controlling asthma even though it has several side effects: earache, fever, cough, headache, diarrhea, sore throat, abdominal pain, and rhinitis. In some cases, it can cause a running horse, ear infection, and a sinus infection (Lilley et al. 2017). Some of the rare side effects are pus in the urine, while the less common side effects include sweating, joint pain, bloody nose, and fatigue. The information is vital so that patients can detect the adverse effects early before they worsen (Bluher et al., 2019). Some patients can get allergic reactions after taking the medication, such as peeling skin, rash, tightness of throat or chest, trouble talking or swallowing, and swelling of the throat, tongue, lips, face, and mouth. Pancreases problems can also occur, characterized by back or stomach pain (Bluher et al., 2019). Other adverse effects include liver problems such as yellow eyes or skin, feeling tired, and dark urine.
The information included in the brochure about the drug interactions that arise with montelukast includes trimethoprim, losartan, zafirlukast, phenytoin, and amiodarone dexamethasone, amodiaquine, and fluconazole (Varma et al. 2017). Other medications that interact with the medicine are Lyrica, Flonase, breo ellipta, aspirin, Cymbalta, and Benadryl. In most instances, it can be safe to use painkillers while also taking montelukast (Varma et al., 2017). Despite this, it is crucial to avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen since they can worsen asthma symptoms.
The three teaching points that need to be in the brochure about the medication include;
1. Contraindications – even though the medication is useful, it would be vital to withhold it in certain situations (Lilley et al. 2017). Some of the familiar contexts include a case where the person has suicidal thoughts. This can occur before taking the medication or even after the person has started taking the drug. In such as case, they should not take it (Di Salvo et al. 2020). Other contraindications include pregnancy, jaundice, phenylketonuria, severe asthma, hepatitis, anxiety disorders, depression, high level of eosinophils in the blood, and inflammation of blood vessels, especially those under the skin.
2. Administration route – the drug is administered orally as a tablet (Aigner et al. 2020). The medication is taken in the evening.
