Introduction
Health care delivery with positive outcomes is associated with a number of factors among them adequacy of the staff and their ability to deliver quality care. As such when the patients come in to the hospital there are enough staff to handle their cases and help them achieve the best health outcomes possible. This also reflects on the hospital status along with the skills of the medical teams. However, there are challenges that arise where the staff available are not matched to the number of patients that come to the hospital. In the recent past, there have been a shortage of medical staff at the hospital an aspect that is affecting the quality of care delivered (Donnelly, 2017). The hospital has been struggling with shortage of staff with reference to nurses, physicians, ancillary services and allied health care providers (Buerhaus et al., 2007). At the same time, there has been a challenge with the quality of care delivered. This is with reference to poor performance at the hospital leading to reduction in the Medicare Reimbursement dollars (Rice, 2015). While these challenges have affected the hospital status and the confidence of most of the patients, there is a way to restore the reputation of the hospital. This is through improved communications, collaboration among the staff and teamwork to enhance efficiency.
Background
Starting October 1st of the year 2008, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services promulgated a policy that would see some of the hospital getting less reimbursement relative to the quality of care that they offer to their services (Stone et al., 2010). This policy was passed after it was established that some of the selected conditions are acquired during the patients’ stay at the hospital and are not present during admission. This is to mean that the conditions are as a result of the medical teams’ errors or simply negligence (Stone et al., 2010). These are conditions that are associated with infection acquired at the hospital and they tend to be very expensive and more often than not cause the patients to develop morbidity and in some of the cases mortality (Rice, 2015).
Over the last few years the health sector has been struggling with health care delivery with a reducing population of the medical practitioners (Donnelly, 2017). There has been a dwindling number of for example nurses in the health care field, an aspect that is impacting negatively the profession and even the ability to offer quality care. What is more disturbing is that, research projections indicate that there is a chance that the numbers are bound to reduce even further by the year 2020 (Salka, 2017). According to the Association of American medical colleges, there will be an estimated shortage of primary care doctors at the tune of 45,000, medical specialists and surgeons at the tune of 46,000 by the year 2020 (Salka, 2017). There has been an increase in the number of older people in the population all of whom require care. At the same time the number of people that have health insurance has also increased (Salka, 2017). However, the health care practitioner’s numbers have not increase relative to this increases in the demand for health c...
