Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health
Job Market Options in My Educational Level
Undergraduate nurses have various working options in the United States, including being a nurse manager, which entails supervising daily operations in healthcare activities. Undergraduate registered nurses can also decide to work as nurse anesthetics and corporate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other health care professionals to deliver anesthesia to patients in surgery and labor. Delivery nurses provide care and educate women during pregnancy, delivery, and afterbirth care (Davis et al., 2021). Undergraduate registered nurses can also decide to be chief nursing officers whose main role is guiding managers and staff. A patient educator is another option available for undergraduate registered nurses. Under the option, nurses are required to formulate education programs for patients in numerous healthcare setups. Lastly, they can decide to be critical care nurses whose main role is conducting an assessment of patients and implementing the best care plans for patients in intensive and critical care units.
IOM Future on Nursing Higher Education
Highly educated nurses with adequate knowledge about nursing operations are required for the existing variations in nursing education pre- and post-acquisition licenses. The BSN degree should act as a ground to begin nursing education and include multiple opportunities to facilitate progress to higher degree programs. The IOM stipulates that nurses and the entire faculty should further their education to perfect their skills in the nursing sector and offer quality care to patients. The nursing process requires knowledge acquired from school and real-life activities. Nurses should have additional education to ensure they provide quality patient care, understand their needs and reduce death and admission rates. Also, BSN nurses are more preferred since they work in various healthcare settings. The main distinction between DNP and Ph.D. is the primary focus of DNP, which is on clinical operations, while Ph.D. focuses on research. The career objective of nurses determines the path they take between DNP and Ph.D. The Ph.D. program is mainly based on research, and nurses undertaking the program must complete a research project and a dissertation which includes teaching. The curriculum does not involve patient care hours. DNP students are required to complete a capstone project which entails identifying healthcare problems and proposing evidence-based solutions to handle the issues (Yancey, 2020). Also, DNP programs focus on clinical practices, essential for an individual to graduate. Once students attain proper credentials, DNP and Ph.D. can operate as nurse practitioners. I prefer interprofessional and direct patient care over a research-based Ph.D., so DNP is my preferred choice for further education. The DNP program would provide me with a platform to directly give, evaluate and continuously improve evidence-based nursing and meet the health requirements of the modern population.
I look forward to accomplishing the goal within five years.
