Bernard Tyson is the CEO and chairman of Kaiser Permanente, one of the biggest health care organizations in the U.S. While Tyson assumed the role of CEO in 2013 and chairmanship in 2013, he has been at the organization for over 34 years (Kaiser Permanente, 2019). Throughout his time at the organization, he has served numerous roles including division president, hospital administrator, and chief operating officer.
Transformational leadership theory best describes Tyson’s leadership style. According to Eisenbeiss, Knippenberg, and Boerner (2008), the theory has four components; idealized influence, where the leader acts as a role model; inspirational motivation, where the leader instills confidence in followers; intellectual stimulation, where the leader inspires creativity in followers; and individualized consideration, where the leader mentors and coaches followers. Eisenbeiss, Knippenberg, and Boerner (2008), also point out that a transformational leader articulates a future vision that is appealing and challenging at the same time to the followers.
