In the human anatomy, the pelvic bones connect the trunk to the lower extremities. It is a basin-shaped complex that helps support the upper body weight as the weight is transferred to the lower limbs. The male and female pelvic bones have noteworthy anatomical, functional, and structural differences.
One of the differences between the male and female pelvic bones relates to size and function. The male pelvic bone is smaller and narrower but also heavier and thicker to support the weightier upper male body (Golden, 2011). Normally, the pelvis consists of two connected hip bones referred to as the coxal bones, which are the coccyx and sacrum. On the hip bones, three bones exist, which are illium, ischium, and pubis (Golden, 2011). When two hip bones are attached together, they form a pubic arch. The female pubic arch differs from that of a male. In males, the pubic arch is V-shaped and at approximately less than 70 degrees (Golden, 2011). In males, the ischial spines and subsequent tuberosities take a heavier form while they project deeper into the pelvic cavity. It is this feature that allows the male pelvic to support the wider and heavier upper body in males. The distal portion of the spine forms the sacrum and the coccyx.
