Key Barriers to Widespread Adoption of a Clinical Decision Support System
The clinical decision support system (CDSS) plays an integral role in providing essential information and knowledge in a healthcare facility, and this aids in enhancing healthcare provision. Through CDSS, cases of error-making are avoided, which helps increase the quality of care given to patients( Fernandes 2020). However, despite the many benefits that come with the use of CDSS in hospitals, there are still various key barriers to the widespread adoption of this system (Musen, 2021). Yang (2019) shows that a significant number of healthcare providers continue to oppose the adoption of CDSS, claiming that they have better judgment when dealing with complex conditions than taking guidelines from a system. Furthermore, the CDSS requires a lot of accountability and may cause fragmented workflow (Zhang, 2020). Hence, due to the assumption that the system is complex to use and that it is likely to fatigue the caregivers, its use continues to be shunned (Ford et al., 2021). The paper will discuss how legal issues, physician beliefs when dealing with complex medical cases, accountability needed when using CDSS, and clinicians' attitudes towards scientific guidelines are key barriers to the widespread adoption of CDSS.
Dowse, R. (2022). Advantages and Functions of Clinical and Decision Support Systems. Journal: Journal of Biomedical and Sustainable Healthcare Applications, 43-50. http://anapub.co.ke/journals/jbsha/jbsha_pdf/2022/jbsha_volume_2-issue_1/JBSHA202202006.pdf
Dowse (2022)gives a critical analysis of why, although CDSS continues to prove to be an essential tool for health care providers, it is still not adopted by a significant number of individuals . In the article, various advantages of using CDSS are well explained and the reasons why some hospitals shun using them are also provided. This article is relevant in explaining why there are barriers to the widespread adoption of CDSS. According to Dowse (2022), the system is assumed to fatigue the caregivers, and most individuals claim that the quality of Medicare may be adversely affected with the complete adoption of CDSS in hospitals.
Liberati, E. G., Ruggiero, F., Galuppo, L., Gorli, M., González-Lorenzo, M., Maraldi, M., ... & Moja, L. (2017). What hinders the uptake of computerized decision support systems in hospitals? A qualitative study and framework for implementation. Implementation Science, 12(1), 1-13. /publication/319870967_What_hinders_the_uptake_of_computerized_decision_support_systems_in_hospitals_A_qualitative_study_and_framework_for_implementation
Liberati et al. (2017) analysis portrays that although CDSS was designed to help in efficacy as it was intended to aid clinicians with better decision-making when treating patients, it is still not adopted in many hospitals. The article demonstrates that clinicians' attitude towards scientific evidence hinders the adoption of CDSS. Most clinicians believe they have better experience in dealing with matters than taking guidelines from a computerized system. Additionally, due to a lack of enough t...
