John Snow wanted to provide an evidenced report on the cause of the Cholera outbreak in London in 1854. Although he could have used the evidence provided by other scholars in various sources such as books and videos, Snow decided to indulge in epidemiology. He might have thought and believed in himself that he can achieve what scientists attain when carrying out a study and getting excellent results. Therefore Snow experimented to identify the cause of the disease. The hypothesis for the study was that cholera is a waterborne disease, and the source of the disease was a water pump in the city (Fine et al., 2013). Knowing that the hypothesis is testable, Snow implemented his plan by experimenting.
Most people in London used water from the pump for necessary activities like drinking, food preparation, and washing. This population might have involved all the people in the country expect wealthy demographics with private water sources in their homes. Besides, the source was the only one available and near the settlements. Considering cholera as a water bone disease motivated Snow to focus and carry out the experiment, with the primary aim of the execution being proving the hypothesis to show evidence. Thus, Snow interviewed the affected victims, their families, and associates about their living and habits regarding the water from the pump (Fine et al., 2013).
