The nursing profession is highly dependent on knowledge, skills, and evidence. These are gained through school and experience as a practicing nurse. However, for nursing knowledge to be developed, three core concepts must be present; theory, practice, and research. These three concepts are interrelated and their relationship is cyclical (Saleh, 2018). Understanding this interrelationship is essential.
Theory refers to a set of structured ideas that are used to account for or explain a phenomenon (Gray et al., 2018). Theory development is a critical part of the nursing profession. Any theory that has been developed should be testable because it is based on experiences, thoughts, and findings from research (Gray et al., 2018). Practice refers to the application of knowledge and ideas (Saleh, 2018). The nursing practice involves applying the skills, knowledge, and evidence from research. In practice, nurses have to rely on the aforementioned competencies, in addition to ideas obtained through critical thinking and informed judgment of healthcare issues. Research involves systematically investigating a problem to either create new knowledge or build on existing knowledge (Gray et al., 2018). Scientific methods of inquiry are involved in research to establish facts about an issue. Knowledge obtained through research is used to guide nursing practice in the form of protocols and procedures.
Given the above definitions, it is clear that the three concepts are related and in fact, dependent on each other, in some ways. Practice, and specifically nursing practice, is dependent on both theory and research (Veloza-Gomez, 2016). Nursing theory is important in knowledge generation for nursing practice.
