Interprofessional Teams: Collaboration and Communication
Interprofessional teams facilitate the integration of care for improved health outcomes. According to Pomare et al. (2019), care integration is especially critical in mental healthcare because effective mental healthcare requires collaboration between professionals in mental health, physical health, and social services. In a psychiatric setting/hospital, patients often require treatment for severe mental health issues. These settings require interprofessional collaboration because the goal is to treat the mental condition and help the patient live independently in the outside world when possible. Also, these settings are characterized by uncertainty and complexity, especially when dealing with chronic cases (Pomare et al., 2019). Professionals who work together for better patient outcomes at the psychiatric hospital include psychiatrists who diagnose and treat mental health conditions and psychiatric nurses who provide care under the supervision of psychiatrists. Others include social workers who assess the mental and social needs of mental health patients and psychotherapists who provide talk therapy to patients.
Psychiatric settings are characterized by challenges stemming from the healthcare system and the patient population. One of the critical issues in psychiatric settings is limited institutional and human resources (Carbonell et al., 2020). The current mental health labor force is insufficient to meet the increasing demand for mental health care. According to Lake (2017), the mental health workforce is shrinking due to an aging workforce. This affects the dynamics between healthcare professionals, patients, and families. It places a high workload on professionals in this setting. It also hinders the ability of healthcare professionals to offer adequate care, which then affects the patients and families seeking care. Further, the stigma around mental health issues hinders patients' and families' ability to seek help (Lake, 2017; Carbonell et al., 2020). It also affects the dynamics in the setting because patients are unwilling to receive care even when professionals can provide adequate care.
Effective teamwork in the psychiatric setting or any setting relies on a set of attributes of healthy team culture. One key attribute is communication. De Sutter et al. (2019) state that an open and communicative culture facilitates interprofessional collaboration. In the absence of open communication, information gets lost, and this affects individuals'/groups' ability to work as a team. Another critical attribute of healthy team culture is role clarity. Establishing clear roles in a team of different professionals ensures that every team member fulfills their role (De Sutter et al., 2019). It leaves no room for doubt, negligence, and blame because everyone understands what is expected of them. Another critical attribute of a healthy team culture that facilitates interprofessional collaboration is support from team members and leaders. De Sutter et al. (2019) believe a supportive work environment enhances teamwork, esp...
