Interprofessional Collaborations
The holistic approach in healthcare is a remarkable tool. Collaborations between nurses, doctors, pharmacists, physical or occupational therapists, palliative care providers, and patients enable healthcare providers to deliver optimal quality care, both effectively and efficiently. Collaborations can be both interprofessional and intra-professional. They also help solve care problems that a patient might be experiencing and pinpoint the root cause of the issues.
During my service in the maternity ward, I witnessed and took part in several interprofessional collaborations. A patient that I was closely working with was a 32-year-old woman with gestational diabetes. She was 30 weeks pregnant, and the first two trimesters were smooth. However, she started experiencing several gastric and liver problems, including acid and bile reflux, indigestion, nausea, early dumping, and palpitations. After monitoring her heart rate, I found out about her tachycardia. Upon assessment and discussion with the physician and the patient and her family, I communicated the issue with the pharmacist. Because the doctor was well aware of her symptoms, I urged the pharmacist to change her medication or optimize a combination medication plan to quickly relieve her symptoms to make her pregnancy less complicated and troublesome.
I was later told that such observations are highly necessary as the patient themselves might perceive them as side effects of some medication they are on. Prolonging such situations can negatively affect both the well-being of the mother and the health of the baby. If these things are...
