Internal Regulation and Sustainability
The healthcare of a country is an integral sector that helps to maintain sanity and normalcy in all other sectors. Countries entrust their health to individuals who are expected to maintain their focus on altruism while keeping their interests at bay. As Cruess and Cruess (1, 2005) “in return for a physician’s commitment to altruistic service, a guarantee of professional competence, the demonstration of morality and integrity in their activities, and their agreement to address issues of social concern, society grants to both individual physicians and the profession considerable autonomy in practice, status in the community, financial rewards, and the privilege of self-regulation.” Such an agreement warrants the presence of regulatory bodies that can help ensure that healthcare organizations are committed to their responsibilities of enhancing healthcare outcomes. In every organization, physicians have to understand their roles and commitment to altruistic service. The success and/or failure of the above is highly dependent on the internal regulations within a healthcare organization. However, as will be shown later, a significant part of it is also dependent on a person’s ethics. So, while assessing the internal regulation of a healthcare organization, this article will also consider the role of personal ethics, self-regulation, and governing bodies in enhancing the quality of patient care.
How personal ethics and self-regulation influence the quality of patient care
Personal ethics and self-regulation greatly influence the quality of patient care. As already indicated, the society trusts physicians with their healthcare needs and in return rewards physicians’ commitment to their roles. However, it is crucial to note that even with policy changes and the adoption of more stringent measures in the healthcare sector, the quality of patient care granted is heavily dependent on the physicians themselves. The choices physicians make, their decision to overlook their interests and serve in the interest of the society, are factors that can be overlooked but that greatly showcase the amount of power they have. But, for the most part, and for a majority of physicians, their personal commitment to enhancing the quality of patient care helps ensure that they stay true to their roles.
One way that personal ethics and self-regulation can influence the quality of patient care is by encouraging honesty in healthcare organizations. One major problem that negatively influences patient care is medical errors. In the event a medical error has occurred, it is possible that a patient’s health can deteriorate fast in the event that the physician responsible decides to maintain their silence on the matter. However, personal ethics and self-regulation can encourage honesty with a special focus on the health...
