Due to technology development, nurses must not only know how to take care of patients but also learn how to use technology appropriately and safely in their daily routines. In my assignment, I will discuss computer technology, which is one of the most common applications that is being used in nursing. Nurses use computer technology to perform most of their day to day activities. Nurses use computers to order medication and supplies, for timekeeping purposes, to schedule staff, email, and for research purposes. By uses of systems known as electronic health records or electronic medical records, nurses use computers for all patient documentation (Jiang, Chen, & Chen, 2014). Below are some of the common uses of computer technology in the nursing profession:
Diagnosis: Electronic health records make it easier for the nurses to manage, record, and retrieve data on their patients, thus accurate diagnosis. Nurses carry out health assessments such as oxygen levels or blood pressure, and by them having technological skills, they can save the results electronically and update them in the patient’s electronic health record. Computer technology reduces diagnosis errors and time.
Treatment and Medications: Nurses use electronic medical records to review and record the prescribed medication. Different apps and software are also used to manage patient medication. These apps help nurses in avoiding medication errors and unintentional drug interactions. Computer technology ensures that these records are kept private.
Telemedicine: It entails the usage of telecommunication technology in treating patients in remote areas. Nurses use telemedicine to reach patients in rural areas and discuss their health concerns. The nurses help them in deciding whether or not to get medical attention in a health facility. It is also useful to patients with disabilities who can hardly make trips to see a doctor (Luevano & Morton, 2019).
Significance of Computer Technology in Nursing
Improved communication systems: Most hospitals have implemented communication systems that nurses and other members can use to communicate and receive patient emergencies using specialized apps in their devices. This ensures that nurses work efficiently and stay in touch with each other.
Computer technology has a system that enables nurses to always have an updated record of the available pharmaceuticals in stock. This makes it easier and faster when giving medicine description, uses composition and side effects. Having an updated inventory of medicine, nurses can prescribe the available medication to their patients (Van Braak & Goeman, 2015).
Clinical Records: Computers allow nurses to have faster access to clinical records. Through interconnected networks, nurses can have access to clinical records of patients that have been treated in other hospitals. Access to clinical records provides critical information on patient health.
