Understanding the importance of critical analysis in learning is essential for every student. It allows him to better grasp the lectures by having a more proactive approach in understanding and comprehension. Accordingly, this paper will focus on conducting a critical analysis on Lectures 6 and 7 of the lecture on Pharmaceutical Politics and Policy. This includes looking into the various rules and regulations regarding an individual's compliance, information, and rights. Overall, the author believes that a critical analysis of these topics is highly beneficial for it increases understanding, comprehension, and application of these policies in the student's future practice.
Critical Analysis
Lecture 6 on Pharmaceutical Politics and Policy described the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in the profitability of pharmaceutical companies. Notably, the chapter described that companies could generate a strong and consistent flow of profits over the drugs they sell by having solid patents and copyrights over different pharmaceutical products. However, while this is indeed the cornerstone of the pharmaceutical industry and its drive to produce new products, the author believes that policies and regulations should be balanced for the sake of public health and safety.
On the one hand, the author also believes that IPRs are essential for any pharmaceutical company. First, this is because, without these protections, these companies would not be able to operate since there is a higher risk of losses from external competitors continuously. In addition to this, the author also believes that IPRs help protects the public from counterfeit and less effective versions of the drugs. This is the reason why companies invest highly in the pharmaceutical industry of the country.
On the other hand, however, the author believes that the Canadian healthcare policy should also balance between the continuous investments (and profitability) in the pharmaceutical company and the health and welfare of the people. For example, it was provided in the lecture that the current policies provide for some loopholes by developing a new formulation of products. This creates and retains the monopolistic hold of a company over the production of these drugs. In turn, this monopoly maintains the high prices of the drug, which could have been more affordable had there been intense competition between various competitors.
In line with this dilemma, the author believes that the course content for this lecture should also provide a more contextual element of the effects of IPRs on indigenous groups and other vulnerable populations in Canada.
