What is the thesis or main idea of the source?
Lewsen offers his audience an in-depth account of the mental health crisis that a majority of university and college students face in Canada. He makes it clear that currently, more students are experiencing mental health challenges at rates beyond the capability of universities and colleges. Lewsen paints the picture of the mental health challenges through the lives of three victims, Owoaje, Ashley, and Sarah. Through trauma, familial experiences, and personal challenges, these three young women have experienced the worst of the unpreparedness of colleges and universities regarding dealing with mental health issues. However, Lewsen goes a step further to explain the difference between today’s young men and women from those of old. He notes that today, there are more stressors compared to 50 or 60 years ago. Further, he indicates that the university culture today is also shifting to a more depersonalized approach, which leads to more alienation of students. However, despite the above, Lewsen writes that universities and colleges are striving to match the challenge, but they cannot solve the problem alone. He makes it clear that for universities and colleges to offer patient-focused mental health interventions and in apt supply, there needs to be help or partnership with the federal and local governments.
