Innovation and Individual
It is without a doubt that the nursing profession plays a significant role in ensuring the health and wellbeing of patients and populations for sustainable growth and development of society as a whole. Achieving the said objective requires the establishment of an effective healthcare system that meets the diverse health care needs of individuals, patients, or members of society. As the primary care givers, nurses are integral to the achievement of the noble objective owing to the wide scope of care services offered by the profession. Aiding in the realization of the objective of delivering quality healthcare is the nurses’ close proximity to their patients’ environment, allowing them to remain updated on the emerging care needs and demands. Addressing such emerging care needs further demand the development and implementation of improved and effective approaches and interventions. Innovation in nursing offers an excellent platform for developing such effective and improved nursing care practices.
According to Weberg (2009), innovation is a multi-dimensional concept that functions to change the way of doing things within an organization, its interaction with the environment within which it operates, and their perceptions of their relationships with different stakeholders and other players in the industry CITATION Web09 \l 1033 (Weberg D. , 2009). In essence, innovation may occur across the social, technological, and other economic dimensions. The multidimensional application of innovation in nursing complicates or rather broadens its scope of definition. However, the diverse applications find common ground in the significant role played by nursing innovation towards improving the quality of patient care. Innovation in nursing may thus refer to all the changes in the factors influencing the process of nursing care, such nursing interventions and the available infrastructure aiding or used in the delivery of care. Innovation in nursing is a holistic approach functioning to create new or different ways towards improving the quality of care through reduced costs of care and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of care delivery.
