Case study: Elements of practice Nurse Johns is assigned to insert a new nasogastric tube for Mrs. Smith, who lives alone with her paid caregivers in a large home overlooking a lake. When you arrive, you notice that Mrs. Smith is comatose and quietly lying in her bed, which has an ornate headboard facing a large picture window with a view of the lake. There is nothing in the room or on the headboard except a small statue of Quan Yin, Bodhisattva of compassion. Quan Yin’s hand, symbolizing the hand of mercy and compassion, is lightly attached, as is customary, because it can be removed. Answer the following questions about holistic nursing and then compare your responses to the “nurse’s answers” that follow.

The approach that would differentiate Mrs. Smith's nursing care as holistic is if it included the three basic principles of holistic care: a show of care, preservation of the patient's dignity, and reduced anxiety. Holistic nursing care is a practice that focuses on healing a person's body by unifying the mind, body, spirit, emotion, and environment. Nurses have the training and knowledge to take care of their patients. However, holistic care introduces mental attitudes, which are believed to impact a patient's wellness. For holistic care to be effective, patients need to know that their nurses care for them deeply. Simultaneously, the nurses tending to Mrs. Smith have to inject positivity into the patient's surroundings. A positive environment has been shown to propel patients into responding well to treatment.
For the nursing approach to be holistic, maintaining the patient's dignity would also be critical. Some patients have severe illnesses that they end up depending entirely on their nurses. Therefore, it becomes hard for such patients to maintain their dignity since they often need nurses to help them even with the smallest things. Thus, the nurses in this case study would have to show compassion when dealing with Mrs. Smith to help preserve her dignity. As nursing care takes on a holistic approach, nurses also need to connect on a deeper level with their patients with the hope of eliminating their stress. Hence, for holistic care to be evident in Mrs. Smith's case, the nurses would also need to reduce her stress.
