Although ventilation and respiration are concepts that explain the exchange of gases between living organisms and the exterior environment, the two processes are different from each other in terms of the air's direction. Regarding ventilation, the direction of the air is unilateral. Ventilation accounts for the supply of lungs with fresh air to ensure an adequate supply of oxygen (Macklem, 1998). Contrastingly, the respiration process's direction is bilateral, involving the supply of fresh air to the lungs and the removal of gaseous wastes from the body through the respiratory system. Coherently, respiration entails two sub-processes, namely: inhalation and exhalation.
