Introduction
In their research article titled “Coping with Infertility: An Examination of Coping Mechanisms in Iranian Women with Infertility.” Journal of Psychiatry, Jahromi & Ramezanli (2015) investigate coping mechanisms among Iranian women with infertility. The number of infertile couples, especially in Western countries, is constantly increasing. Across the globe, it is reported that about 80 million couples are faced with the health issue of infertility. Various reasons are attributed to the increasing percentage of infertility in the world. Jahromi & Ramezanli (2015) speculate that because of increased global population as well as higher age of marriage, couples affected by infertility are increasing. However, the authors claim that the prevalence of infertility differs from one country to another. Their study estimated that there are about two million women in Iran faced with the problem of infertility; thus, this attracted their attention to making further investigations.
Key Points of the Article
In their research, Jahromi & Ramezanli (2015) examine some of the consequences of infertility among women and men. One of the key points made by the authors is that infertility is closely linked to a wide range of psychological and social consequences. However, they added that female partners are usually more affected by infertility compared to their male counterparts. Despite the difference among female and male partners, infertility has always caused major life crisis in families. As a result, this causes or increases stress and other psychological issues among the victims (Jahromi & Ramezanli, 2015). Furthermore, the distress of couples affected by infertility and medical treatment affects couples differently. Some people may feel guilty, depressed, and this can also increase feelings of anxiety.
