Benchmark Assignment - Spiritual Needs Assessment and Reflection

Essay Instructions:

This assignment requires you to interview one person and requires an analysis of your interview experience.
Part I: Interview
Select a patient, a family member, or a friend to interview. Be sure to focus on the interviewee's experience as a patient, regardless of whom you choose to interview.
Review The Joint Commission resource found in topic materials, which provides some guidelines for creating spiritual assessment tools for evaluating the spiritual needs of patients. Using this resource and any other guidelines/examples that you can find, create your own tool for assessing the spiritual needs of patients.
Your spiritual needs assessment survey must include a minimum of five questions that can be answered during the interview. During the interview, document the interviewee's responses.
The transcript should include the questions asked and the answers provided. Be sure to record the responses during the interview by taking detailed notes. Omit specific names and other personal information through which the interviewee can be determined.
Part II: Analysis
Write a 500-750 word analysis of your interview experience. Be sure to exclude specific names and other personal information from the interview. Instead, provide demographics such as sex, age, ethnicity, and religion. Include the following in your response:
What went well?
Were there any barriers or challenges that inhibited your ability to complete the assessment tool? How would you address these in the future or change your assessment to better address these challenges?
How can this tool assist you in providing appropriate interventions to meet the needs of your patient?
Did you discover that illness and stress amplified the spiritual concern and needs of your interviewee? Explain your answer with examples.
Submit both the transcript of the interview and the analysis of your results. This should be submitted as one document. The interview transcript does not figure into the word count.

Interview Analysis
For this interview, my patient, whom I also used for my analysis, was a Hispanic female aged 35 years and who professes a strict adherence to Catholicism. In this respect, my interview went exceptionally well, and proved to be quite beneficial to my development and understanding of the various physical, emotional, and psychological issues that patients undergo. It enabled me to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the various challenges that plague patients and how physicians and other healthcare professionals can work to address this issue. Taking his position into account, it is worth mentioning that my interview went particularly well, and especially as far as conversation with the patient went (McSherry& Ross, 2010). Seeing as many patients like to maintain purely professional relationships with their healthcare attendants, it was quite surprising for me to observe my patient willingly engaging in the interview and presenting me with information that would prove beneficial to developing my understanding of the challenges that she faces, and particularly insofar as honesty with personally sensitive subjects was concerned.
At the same time, it is worth noting that one of the core barriers that inhibited my ability to effectively complete the assessment tool of choice was religion. My patient was a highly religious individual who made it a point to carefully observe all the various religious rules and conditions a required of her in Catholicism. In this sense, her faith in the divine intervention capabilities of God greatly influenced her understanding of healthcare issues, which made it virtually impossible to fully understand her challenges as a patient (McSherry& Ross, 2010). This was mainly because most of her challenges were immediately attributed to the fact that it was God’s will for her to go through the situation in question.
It is also worth acknowledging that the power of interviews is virtually unparalleled when it comes to obtaining first-hand information during the assessment of patients. It not only enables physicians and other necessary health care staff to identify the probable challenges plaguing the patient but also enables said professionals to deve...
