The clinical question guiding the search for the quantitative study is: Are there differences in the experience of incivility in different generations of nursing?
Problem
In this paper, the problem addressed is how acts of incivility affect members of the nursing profession and how acts of incivility impact patient outcomes. The significance of this problem is that uncivil work environments cause hospitals to experience the additional consequences through added costs related to nursing turnover, absenteeism, and decreased work performance. As evidenced in one report, for every percentage increase in turnover rates, the average hospital will spend an estimated $379, 500 (Solutions, 2015). Even though the effects on nurses and hospitals are detrimental, a more detrimental effect of incivility comes from its threat to patient safety and patient outcomes.
Description of Findings
Concepts
The independent variable in the qualitative and quantitative studies is nursing incivility. The quantitative study investigates the different experiences of incivility in two generations of associate degree nursing facility. The variable of interest examined in the qualitative study is how nursing incivility impacts outcomes. The concept of the qualitative study was how workplace incivility could be prevented from the nurses’ perspectives.
Methods
The method used in the qualitative study was unstructured interviews. In-depth interviews were conducted, lasting from thirty-five to sixty-five minutes. Six interviews were conducted at the researcher’s workplace, and thirty interviews were conducted at the hospital. All interviews were audiotape recorded and participants’ behaviors were monitored in the hospital during nursing care and other activities (Abdollahzadeh et al., 2017). The method used in the quantitative study was descriptive methodology, with non-experimental, cross-sectional survey designs. The author’s educational institution approved the institutional board. Licensing and authorization to use the INE (Incivility in Nursing Education) were obtained from the study’s author after the completion of the study (Ziefle, 2018).
Participants
Participants in the qualitative study were purposively chosen from nurses working in Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, based on saturation principles.
