Breast cancer has been ranked as the top cause of death among women in the United States (Ries et al., 2005). Research findings indicate that 1 in 8 women across the US develops breast cancer complications in their lifetime (American Cancer Society, 2021). These findings are alarming and give rise to the growing need to implement community-based outreach programs for breast cancer screening. According to the American Cancer Society, 42 per cent of all cancers, particularly breast cancer, are preventable (ACS, 2021). Research shows that screening as a cancer prevention method and treatment significantly lowers the mortality of patients when access is made available to everyone (ACS, 2021). This paper seeks to research the implementation of a community-based breast cancer screening outreach program in Houston, Texas. It gives insight explicitly into required supplies necessary for implementing this program, educational awareness, and effective patient navigation in the administration of this service.

For a successful screening implementation program, the most critical technological resource required is mammography. When applied timely and effectively, screening mammography is essential to the detection of malignant and occult lesions in the breast. The need for the efficient provision of mammography services that meet the quality assurance requirements described in the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), coupled with the delivery of quality personnel in the community, cannot be overstated. To ensure the delivery of high-quality images, mammograms, the community outreach program should also focus on providing a team of professional individuals who have undergone advanced, specialized and certified training on the use of mammography. Such a team consists of the radiologist, surgeon, and community pathologist. For the program to be successful, it should ensure the deployment of this multidisciplinary team from the inner city to the rural communities to ensure that every community member is reached. Furthermore, adequate training should be provided to all team members to ensure quality administration of mammography.

One prevailing misconception present in the general public and most clinicians is that a normal mammogram is similar to a routine, complete breast examination. Despite the widespread knowledge that mammograms are the best and most effective tool for detecting breast cancer, it is a fact that most mammograms miss approximately 15 to 20 per cent of breast cancer cases (Chan et al., 2015). Proper and adequate information has to be provided to the individuals about the importance of screening activities to prevent cancer and self-checks as the primary screening method available to the masses.
