Impact of Elimination Complexities
Disease elimination refers to stopping or reducing to zero incidences of infection caused by a specifically established pathogens in a particular geographical area. This is done through several deliberate measures such as prescription of medicine that cure the disease or administration of vaccines. Elimination encompasses total and permanent reduction to zero new cases of the particular disease. In most cases, the first step in eliminating a particular disease in a given region is disease control. Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) is an example of disease control that helps to reduce transmission of HIV virus from the mother to infants they bear. PMTCT services are best positive when offered before conception, throughout the pregnancy period, and breastfeeding (Nesheim et al., 2013).
Diseases affect both the lives of the victims or patients, as well as their families. Elimination complexities is a state where the process of elimination and eradication of a particular disease becomes complicated and difficult. The effects of elimination complexities can be felt by the family and victim or patient who is suffering from a particular disease. Some of the effects caused by elimination complexities include lack of control and helplessness, interfering the leisure time, interfering with school and work, social impact, psychological impact, and financial impact. Lack of control and helplessness majorly affects the patient and family’s attitude in that complexities in elimination can result in frustration, anger, and hopelessness.
Elimination complexities may also have social impacts whereby the patients and their families’ behavior may be different from the others. Diseases can result in causing mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, tension, and stress (Cleveland Clinic, 2016). It is essential to note that the cost of treatment of some diseases is very high. Therefore elimination complexities of those diseases may affect the patient and family’s income and finances. A lot of money can be spent to attain the full recovery of the patient. In USA research, a particular family spent $3630 to $17700 for caring for their family member suffering from dementia (Golics et al., 2013).
