Ida J. Orlando’s Dynamic Nurse-Patient Relationship Theory The Reason for Choosing the Selected Nursing Theory
I chose Orlando’s theory because it provides a conceptual framework for nursing leadership and patient care. As a nurse leader, I would apply Orlando’s model by using my perceptions, thoughts, and feelings to take action within the nursing facility and ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care. The dynamic nurse-patient relationship model empowers the Registered Nurse (RN) to advance from nurse manager to nurse leadership roles via the dynamic leader-follower relationship model. According to this theory, the nurse leader and the follower (employee) interactions are dynamic. Both parties are increasingly vital to the delivery of patient-centered care. Instead of emphasizing control, the theory suggests that leaders offer direction to their followers, allowing for commitment and motivation (Gaudet & Howett, 2018).
Brief Summary of the Nursing Theory
The dynamic nurse-patient relationship theory was created after 3 years of actively observing and engaging in the health care organization experiences with nurses, patients, students, and support staff. The experiences and observations indicated that better patient outcomes are influenced by nurses’ responses (both non-observable and observable) to the client. This theory established nursing and physician as separate and distinct professional roles. The theory’s primary purpose was to identify approaches for training nursing students to employ effective nursing practices, such as communication. The three key concepts associated with the theory are the client’s behavior, the practitioner’s intervention to address the identified behavior, and the professional’s subsequent course of action (Gaudet & Howett, 2018).
How the Nursing Theory Addresses the Nursing Metaparadigm Concepts
The nursing metaparadigm is categorized into four concepts: nursing, health, environment, and person. Orlando’s theory addressed person, nursing, and health concepts and disregarded the environment dimension. Regarding the person, Orlando emphasized emphasizing the patient and added that nurse-patient engagement is inherently dynamic. Within the nursing dimension, Orlando conceptualized nursing as an independent and unique...
