Research indicates the presence of microbiota in the eyes and illustrates how the microorganisms protect the eyes from pathogenic attacks. The ocular surface of individual eyes consists of mucosal tissue. Despite the tissue being exposed to various environmental organisms, it can fully protect itself from these infections. Generally, tears from the eyes wash microbes present in the eyes. In addition, ocular secretions have anti-microbial features like lysozyme and complement. According to Leger et al., (2017), commensal microbes in the eyes are responsible for protecting against infections.
