Homelessness and Mental Illness: Literature Review
Homelessness and mental health are critical problems in contemporary society, especially in Cuyahoga County. Based on the PICOT, psychoeducation is a suitable intervention to address the adverse effects of homelessness and mental illness on different populations in society. Homelessness is critical since it comprises specific issues such as psychological distress, depression, and anxiety (Jensen, 2018). Therefore countering the mental health issues would ensure the mentally ill have adequate space to restore their conditions and engage other populations. Homelessness and mental illness are also critical since it causes other antisocial behaviors in society, thus jeopardizing normal activities. The literature review compared research questions, sample populations, limitations and identified specific gaps that need to be closed to resolve homelessness and mental illness.
A Comparison of Research Questions
According to a study conducted by Jensen (2018), homelessness is positively correlated to mental illness. Jensen (2018) identified that most of the population below the poverty line is prone to mental illness. The research question was 'What is the connection between mental illness and how can unified dignity be used in addressing homelessness and mental illness' (Jensen, 2018). Bassuk et al. (2015) also conducted a similar study to address mental illness and homelessness among children. The research question was 'What is the rate of mental illness and homelessness among the children (Bassuk et al., 2015). Children are increasingly being exposed to mental issues due to homelessness, and psychological intervention was significant. Therefore, the research question of Jensen (2018) and Bassuk et al. (2015) advocate for the same intervention for reducing the increased rate of mental illness.
On the contrary, Jansen et al. (2015) advocate for models and approaches necessary for addressing mental illness. The research question for the study is 'What psychological models and interventions are effective in addressing mental illness and homelessness' (Jansen et al., 2015). Psychoeducation plays a significant role in combating psychological distress caused by mental health problems and homelessness. Lastly, all the studies justified that homelessness adversely impacts the mental health of different populations, from children and adults.
A Comparison of Sample Populations
Jensen (2018) used a theoretical sampling technique to shape the research question and understand the role of dignity in homelessness and mental health solutions.
