Evolution of the Concept of Health
The initial definition of health was conceptualized in 1946 at the International Health Conference in New York but became operative in 1948. The World Health Organization (WHO) constitution first principle described health as a status of best mental, social, and physical wellbeing, and not simply the absence of infirmity or disease. The seven-decade-old WHO definition is currently deemed historical. It depicts a vital milestone in the historical track onset, within Western medical practice, with the concept of health defined according to Hippocrates’ proposition. Today, different scientists within distinct medical environments define health differently depending on their anatomical, epidemiological, social, molecular, functional, and physiological perspectives (Andrea, 2018). The concept of health has evolved to include various interrelated concepts of health, illness prevention, and wellness. Today, the healthcare system’s goal is to cultivate a wellness-centered community that emphasizes illness prevention and health promotion instead of managing an illness. Health and wellness programs play a critical role in illness prevention. It is crucial to engage in health and wellness programs to enhance one’s wellbeing according to the current health concepts.
