Healthcare Delivery System: Inpatient and Outpatient Services

Essay Instructions:

INPATIENT, OUTPATIENT, AND ANCILLARY SERVICES
Assignment Overview
At some point in your professional career, you may work within or alongside inpatient and outpatient settings. Working in these settings can be similar to working in two completely different “health care worlds.” What exactly are the differences between outpatient and inpatient medicine? Fundamentally, inpatient means checking into the hospital or care facility, while outpatient defines health care that can be administered without staying at the hospital. However, what has been prescribed above is the most basic terms of outpatient and inpatient services.
Case Assignment
Use the online library, required reading, and other resources to research and develop a more complete appreciation of the inpatient and outpatient settings. References should be no more than 5 years old. Websites should only be from reliable sources (only acceptable when accessing government sites).
Based on your findings, write a graduate-level comparative analysis of inpatient and outpatient services that clearly addresses the following:
1.Identify and describe inpatient settings and outpatient settings. Provide and explain at least two examples for each setting (e.g., Ambulatory Surgery Center vs. Rehabilitation Center).
2. Classify the typical services provided and key personnel between inpatient settings and outpatient settings.
3. Identify, describe, and evaluate a trend that is currently impacting inpatient and outpatient settings. These can be trends related to technology, supply, and demand, political climate, regulatory, demographic changes, or patient care.
4. Analyze the trends, and thinking as a health care administrator, how do you capitalize on these trends to improve operation and bottom-line performance? How can you mitigate the negative impact of the trends?
Length: 3-4 pages, not including the title or reference page(s). Add Running Head and references uploaded and in required reading. All references must be within 5 years. Follow APA guidelines.

Healthcare Delivery System
When visiting a hospital, the patient should be aware of their medical coverage. The knowledge will enable the patient to understand the part of their Medicare that pays for their healthcare costs. If a patient visits an outpatient setting, they do not need to spend a night in the hospital once the procedure is over. For a person to be referred to as an inpatient, they had to undergo an outpatient setting. The benefit of not being admitted is that patients recover from the comfort of their homes. They do not have to stay in a sterile room or eat hospital food. Apart from being comfortable, patients experience outpatient procedures that are less costly compared to inpatient procedures. In other words, patients save a lot when undergoing outpatient procedures rather than inpatient.
Inpatient and Outpatient Services
In inpatient settings, patients’ healthcare is administered when the patient is administered in the hospital by doctor’s order. When visiting the ER, the patient is initially regarded as an outpatient until admission. In the inpatient setting, patients stay overnight for hospitalization and medical procedures. Services people receive through outpatient care include lab tests, x-rays, and ER services, among others (‘Peconic Bay Medical Center,’ 2017). Ambulatory surgery centers are facilities that offer outpatient settings by providing cost-effective services, thus creating a convenient environment for patients (Shi & Singh, 2017). Hospital-owned outpatient facilities and freestanding ASCs owned by a surgeon are examples of ambulatory surgery centers. Rehabilitation services can be offered in inpatient and outpatient settings depending on the length and impact of the services. Inpatient rehabilitation services are given when a patient stays in a hospital. In contrast, outpatient rehabilitation services are offered when the patient is not admitted, including speech therapy and physical services. Durable medical equipment is a device in outpatient settings that aids the quality of life of a patient. The equipment includes walkers, wheelchairs, prosthetic devices, and orthotics. Most skilled nursing services are offered in the inpatient setting since it involves IV therapy, catheter care, and monitoring vital signs which are done effectively under hospitalization.
Services and Personnel
Traditionally, primary care physicians have been thought of as outpatient clinicians, whereas specialists as inpatient providers. It is an oversimplification, especially considering that health providers fill in the gaps by providing inpatients with general medical care. Regardless of their expertise or settings, efficient care necessitates doctors working together and successfully utilizing health care technology (‘Peconic Bay Medical Center,’ 2017). In addition, many doctors split their time between inpatient and outpatient care. OB/GYNs provide inpatient and outpatient treatment when delivering newborns and when consulting with expectant women during pregnancy checks. In general, inpatients interact with a bigger range of healthcare ...
