Overview
Over the past couple weeks, you have read about and discussed three social issues: language and power; freedom and security; and health and wealth. For this assignment, you will summarize and respond to the readings related to one of the social issues covered in weeks 2-4.
Content
Write a brief summary of the main points for two of the reading selections assigned for your chosen social issue.
Write a brief response to two of the reading selections assigned for your chosen social issue. In your response you should identify and explain your perspective on your selected social issue.
Organization
Include a 1-2 paragraph summary and a 1-2 paragraph response for each of the two readings you selected.
Be sure that your paragraphs follow the guidelines for paragraph structure.
Review the sub-module on Summarizing and Responding to Readings for a sample summary-response paper.
Grammar and Mechanics
Your paper should be written according to the standards for academic writing, with attention to the following:
punctuation: this includes things such as proper use of commas, colons, and apostrophes.
word-level accuracy: this includes things such as proper capitalization, spelling, word-tense, and usage.
sentence-level accuracy: this includes things such as proper sentence boundaries, subject-verb agreement, and pronoun-antecedent agreement.
Take time to proofread after you’ve written your essay. Think about the kinds of writing mistakes you tend to make (like using “text-speak” or sentence fragments) and watch out for those. Reading your paper aloud is a good way to catch any mistakes.
Sources and Documentation
You are required to use two sources for this assignment. Your sources should be selected from the assigned course readings on your selected issue (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth).
Since your sources are from assigned course readings, you do not need to include formal citations. However, you should demonstrate basic attribution. This means you should reference the article titles and authors in your summary-response. For example:
In the reading selection, “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work,” Jean Anyon discusses how American schools are set up to fully educate students from upper-class backgrounds and to give a limited education to students from lower-class backgrounds.
Format and Length
You should submit your summary-response for both readings in a single document/file.
Your paper should include a proper header and title.
Your paper should be typed, double-spaced and in 11 or 12-point font.
Your summary and response for each of the reading selections should be a minimum of two paragraphs (about 400-500 words) in length. This means that your total document will be 4-8 paragraphs (about 800-1000 words) in length.

The article titled “Financial Health is Public Health” focuses on a topic that is often controversial and one that politicians like to avoid. The main argument being made by the author, Jason Purnell, is that public health and financial health are intertwined. Purnell is making the point that people’s physical and mental health is greatly influenced by their financial health. He makes his first argument noting that 72% of American adults worry about money some of the time with 26% worrying about money all the time. For such individuals, he notes that the coping mechanisms often lead to unhealthy behaviors. The insinuation here is that wealthy individuals are not as stressed as low-income individuals. Therefore, they have no business indulging in unhealthy behaviors. Apparently, Purnell writes that adults are not the only ones who experience heightened stress levels when financially challenged. Children are also victims of the same and many grow up troubled and could easily take up risky behaviors as coping mechanisms. Purnell makes it clear that health patterns favor the wealthy. The more one has in terms of wealth, income, and education, the higher the likelihood they will cater to their healthcare needs with some urgency. Purnell also makes the point that universal healthcare will only work if people’s basic needs are catered to. He makes it clear that universal healthcare is indeed necessary but it will never be sufficient if income disparity continues to grow.
In her article titled “Wealth Secures Health,” Clay makes a compelling argument noting that wealth does indeed influence the state of one’s health. She notes that even though some countries like the UK have universal healthcare, health disparities still persist and this is mainly because of income disparities. However, she takes it further noting that it is not simply economic factors that play a role in someone’s health but a combination of factors known as socioeconomic status. Apparently, the higher someone is in society, often impacts their health. Individuals who rank highly in the workplace have a higher likelihood of living healthier lives because with their money, they can choose not to live in certain places. Environmental, as well as behavioral differences, are a major factor in healthcare outcomes declares Clay. One’s position at the socioeconomic ladder plays a great role in influencing their health outcomes.
Another factor that Clay mentions is race. For African Americans, American Indians, Hispanics, and Alaska Natives, poverty is a major impediment to healthcare.
