An engagement with life’s spiritual dimensions has for so far been a fundamental part of health and happiness (Andrade, Lima, Fornara & Bonaiuto, 2012). The role played by spirituality and religion in the modern times medicine entails such practices like application of prayer in healing, evoking forgiveness, pastoral counseling, and compassion. Prayer as brought out in, 1 Peter 2:24 ESV / 416 is very important for healing. The scripture says, "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed." Mediation and prayer has also been used to engage the mystery of death in the end of life care and in the search for meaning in sickness for the patients and the families in addition to the health professionals working with them (Ansari, 2014). Spirituality is brought into the healing process through integrative medicine. While there exist challenges in performing quantifiable scientific investigation on the outcomes of practices that are as unquantifiable as prayer, more light has been shade by the recent research on the effect of spirituality on health. This paper describes the components of a Healing Hospital and its relationship to spirituality.
Components of a Healing Hospital
The Healing Hospital concept entails three basic components: a healing physical environment, the integration of work design and technology, a culture of radical loving care. These components are elaborated as follows:
A healing physical environment
A healing hospital employs aesthetics to improve performance. Apart from taking care of the patients, the healing hospital considers how the employees who pose as the caregivers would work together with families of the patients. The healing environment entails not only the patient but also includes knowledge to aid the family members and even others who are involved in supporting the patient (Andrade, Lima, Fornara & Bonaiuto, 2012). The patient is offered, apart from the medical care, emotional and spiritual well-being. Environmental distractions are also addressed. The environmental distractions addressed in healing hospital include such issues like noise levels, which are caused by the equipment, used at the facility like intercoms, mechanical and electrical equipment and also the housekeeping cleaning and loud music.
The Integration of Work Design and Technology
Healing hospitals collaborate with designers to establish ways to enable the staff to work more effectively, offer added security and privacy for the patients (van Hoof & Verkerk, 2013). Through this collaboration, the healing hospitals make use of the technology to support the healing environment. Provision of technical advancements and integration of technology into a caring environment offered by an empathetic staff are all that define a good healing hospital Andrade, Lima, Fornara & Bonaiuto, 2012).
