The Health Belief Model
African American women have been hit the hardest by the spread of the HIV/AIDS diseases, with research statistics indicating that the diagnosis rate is 15 times more than that of white women. The Center for Diseases Control (CDC) attributes this trend among African American women to HIV stigma, racism, poverty, homophobia and barriers to healthcare (CDC-HIV and African American people 2022). The health Belief Model explains this phenomenon. It is based on the idea that people’s willingness to change their health behaviours mainly depends on their health perceptions (The Health Belief Model 2019). The three constructs of this model that best addresses the concerns of the rising HIV/AIDS infection among African American women are cues to action, perceived barriers and perceived susceptibility.
Cues to action refer to external factors that make a person desire to have a health change (The Health Belief Model 2019). African American women live in toxic environments where they are subjected to racism and other forms of discrimination.
