Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs)
Significance
HAIs are frequently caused by gram-negative bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These infections are detrimental to the health of the patients, primarily due to their poor immunity. It prolongs hospital stays and may result in unprecedented mortalities. Moreover, this can result in the formation of virulent pathogens, which can impose multi-drug resistance on hosts, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (Nekab et al., 2017; Matta et al., 2018; Peters et al., 2019).
It is critical to prevent acquiring these infections because these are more difficult to treat than primary infections. Antibiotics may not be able to cure the disease as the bacteria might not respond to the drug. Moreover, since these can progressively weaken the host’s immune system, patients might acquire other diseases, which increases mortality and morbidity.
