Future of Nursing Report
Diverse strategic changes have been gradually changing the nursing practice in the American context. Wakefield et al. (2021) demonstrate that different forces have combined their efforts to transform specific elements of the nursing practice. In this context, this paper explores the work of various stakeholders in advancing nursing practice, the trends in the nursing workforce and their alignment with the professional needs, contributions of other entities, and Virginia’s initiatives targeting improvements in the niche.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Leading to the Report
This report arises from concerted efforts of different organizations, with the Institute of Medicine or currently NAM leading the process in collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The participants’ work was to advance the existing objective of promoting and upholding health for all cultures across the United States (Wakefield et al., 2021). The entities focus on tackling systemic racism within health care by seeking the participation of other like-minded groups, including those within the nursing community, to advance this goal in all facets of life, such as professional associations and schools.
The progressive collaboration between the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and other stakeholders started in 2019 by exploring social determinants of health in a project sponsored by RWJF. The production of the current report involves town hall meetings by the committee, public sessions, site visits in Philadelphia and Seattle, and recordings to explore the concepts of health and social needs (Wakefield et al., 2021). It also integrates fundamental lessons emerging from the global pandemic of COVID-19 and its effect on American communities and health equity. As a result, the committee’s work in this report revolves around fundamental concepts about implementing appropriate policies with a significant and comprehensive impact on the American people.
Trends Occurring in the Nursing Workforce and Adaptation of the Nursing Education to Meet the Evolving Professional Needs
Trends indicate that the nursing workforce is becoming increasingly diversified. For instance, Wakefield et al. (2021) reveal that despite the past domination by white women, African Americans and Asian population in the profession has increased, rising to 12% and 9.1%, respectively, by 2018. The authors state that registered nurses have more top-level education with graduate and undergraduate qualifications per the 2011 report’s recommendations. Another emerging change is that the RN workforce has an average age of below 44 years as the baby boom continues to retire while younger generations enter the workforce.
Nursing education has consistently adapted to align with the emerging professional needs in the American context. For instance, Wakefield et al.
