Power is the potential of an individual or group to change the lives or habits of other people. Authority is one’s power given to him based on his skills and capabilities, and influence is all about bringing positive or negative changes in the society or a healthcare system. Just like other industries, the misuse of power, authority and influence can cause damaging consequences in the healthcare industry (Hedges, 2012).
As is mentioned by Cohen and Bradford in their book titled Influence Without Authority, it is essential for any healthcare leader to understand the difference between these three concepts. If he is in power, he can influence the lives of his employees and the patients, as well as their families. Being in power doesn’t mean he is free to do something terrible. In any healthcare organization, a leader who doesn’t fulfill his job requirements or is unable to come to terms with his own power deserves to be fired (Cohen & Bradford, 2005).
