Functional Patterns
Functional patterns in nursing provide a format for the admission assessment and a database for nursing diagnoses. Functional health patterns are divided into two phases of evaluation: history taking and examination. It is important for nursing history to ensure that they give a description of the patient’s functional patterns. The functional health patterns include nutritional-metabolic, elimination, sexuality and reproduction, activity and exercise, self-perception and self-concept, values and beliefs, coping and stress tolerance, roles and relationships, sleeping and resting, and cognition and perception (Gorden, 2013). These functional health patterns help the nurses understand the current and past state of health for a patient. Below are discussions of how some of the mentioned functional patterns assist nurses in comprehending the current and past state of health for a patient.
Elimination patterns in nursing refer to the regulation, removal, and control waste materials and by-products in the body. Elimination patterns help nurses to assess the patients in changes in the elimination of urine or bowel. This can assist nurses in understanding the patient’s current state. Elimination helps in the regulation of blood and deactivating and removing poisonous substances from the body. Elimination problems can cause complications in the body of a patient, such as wrinkled skin and constipation. Elimination problems can be as a result of a drug posing side effects to a patient (Registered Nursing, 2020). The nurse may choose to administer a different drug to the patient, reduce the dose prescribed, or add another drug to counter-attack the side effects.
Sleeping and resting patterns provide significant information to the nurses concerning the patient’s health status. It is important for patients to have adequate time for sleeping and resting. Adequate sleeping and sleeping helps to boost immunity in the body of a person. Sleeping is essential to the human body as it enables the body to repair and get prepared for the following day (Fletcher, 2019).
