In the United State, the rise in children and adult obesity has more than tripled over the past 30 years (Ross et al., 2010). The current estimate shows that 20% percent of children ranging from 6-11 years old are overweight or obese in the country (Ogden et al., 2014). These staggering statistics makes diabetes and its associated complications such as heart disease a concern, ranking them as the top 5 leading causes of death in America. Without a solution this rising problem has the potential to only get worse. California has over 30.5% of its children that are overweight and it ranks among the leading states with the highest prevalence of obesity (Ross et al., 2010). Adults in California that are obese account for 10% of the population (California Health Line, 2012). Obesity and overweight based on body mass index (BMI), which shows that those with 30 and above are obese and those having 25 and 29.9 are overweight.
Healthcare providers give assistance to every patient through advancements in research in addition, to treatment options. Obesity is an issue that has a negative impact, producing diseases that pose risks on not only the future of medicine, but also the future of health in America. The fortunate side of childhood obesity is that the people have the ability to drastically improve if not eliminate the problem all together. Obesity is a condition that relates to cardiovascular, respiratory, diabetes and many other illnesses. With the right information and knowledge there is a high chance that one can start to win this battle against such a deadly disease (Ross et al., 2010).
California spends a large amount of finances on diseases related to obesity which when not tackled would amount to 15.7% by the year 2030 (State of Obesity, 2015). Obesity is a lifestyle disease that requires people to be aware of its dangers. In the state of California, the cases of obesity is increasing rapidly among the adults and this is risky to the health of the individuals. The disease not only affects the patient, but its immediate members of a family, the employer and the health systems.
