Fitting in the IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations

According to American Nurses Association (n.d.), “A report from The Institute of Medicine (IOM) calls on nurses to take a greater role in America’s increasingly complex health care system”. This report is coupled with a number of recommendations for the future of nursing. Upon reflecting about these recommendations I saw myself fitting into IOM’s 5th recommendation, which states; “Double the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020” (American Nurses Association, n.d.). I think that this is the most significant among the other recommendations, for my own career because taking up a higher degree of educational attainment could help me pursue a specialized and higher ranking position within the workforce. More specifically, this position that I’m currently aiming is an APN or an Advanced Practice Nurse (Vanderbilt University, n.d.). These days, the demand of an Advanced Practice nurse is constantly increasing due to the need for Registered Nurses who can cater for specialized and higher technical positions which cannot be fulfilled simply by those regular RNs. Some of the main career options of an APN include the following: educators, researchers, specialized practitioners, and administrative positions. On the one hand, I've always wanted to become an APRN, since they can take an academic position where they become educators for future nurses. Aside from this, an APRN can also become a researcher for organizations and parties who are dedicated towards the improvement of the current health-care system. On the other hand, an APRN can also pursue the role of a nurse practitioner, either by going to a specialized field of practice or by being a Nurse administrator.
