In recent years, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) in the department of health and human service has slapped health facilities with monetary fines for breaching the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). One such facility is the Children Medical Centre of Dallas, which had to part with $3.2 million in 2017 after losing information belonging to 3800 patients in 2013. Considering the number of patients whose data was lost and the fact that it is yet to be proven if the information has been used to fraud any of the patient, the $3.2 million fine seems high enough for the violation, which usually attracts up to $50,000 fine for every compromised record (Abouelmehdi, Beni-Hessane & Khaloufi, 2018). Also, most of the patients whose information was lost are children who are likely to have some of the data changed when they become adults.
