In the course of their regular work, medical professionals often come across unexpected cases and situations that challenge the norms and values they have been taught. The job of a health professional requires them to respond to a variety of situations, both routine and irregular, that require attention to detail and the ability to improvise. One such case occurs when a woman in labor is diagnosed with a fetal abnormality. In this reflection, the paper will explore the case study, “Fetal Abnormality,” and reflect on it based on the theories employed by the people regarding the fate of the fetus from a Christian and secular worldview.
The Christian view of the nature of human persons is that each person has a unique identity and nature that cannot be fully understood apart from a person's relationships with other persons. According to the teachings of Christianity, the nature of a person shows that every person is of absolute value and dignity—made in the image of God—and possesses an inherent worth that cannot be fully captured by a person's abilities, achievements, or material possessions (Bratton, 2018). The Christian view is reconcilable with the theory based on human properties, which affirms the moral status of every human being. The theory based on human properties states that every species with a human gene bestows a moral status, which includes the unborn. The theory fits with the Christian understanding of human beings in that it maintains that everyone inherently has human value and dignity right from conception in the womb.
Jessica, Marco, Maria, and Dr. Wilson are using different theories to decide the moral status best for the fetus. In the case study, you can see that Jessica's theory is based on human properties, whereby she recognizes that all life is sacred, including the unborn child, even though she wants a better life economically. Marco is using the social constructivist theory. The social constructivist theory states that knowledge is acquired through interaction with others.
