Family Health Assessment 2
Family is a social institution that may determine the health outcomes and status of each member. Approaching health issues from a family perceptive is crucial in adopting holistic and inclusive health strategies that promote health and quality of life. This paper explores how social determinants of family influence health and advances a model that would improve the health status of a family X.
Overview of Family
Family X comprises Abel (husband), Mariah (wife), and three school-going children. Abel is 42 years old white American with a history of hypertension and diabetes. Mariah is 36 years old white American with a history of obesity and depression episodes. However, his blood sugars remained high due to dietary practices in the family. The family reveals being consistently tired and busy due to their job demands. They rarely engage in physical exercise but have resources for active physical exercise, but such resources are underutilized. Both Mariah and Abel express a desire to commit time for regular physical exercise to improve their health. However, the family reports good communication integration and connectedness, good cognitive functioning, functional biological elimination is optimum, and their sexuality aspect is satisfactory.
Social Determinant of Health in Family X
Social determinants of health significantly influence the couple’s health statuses. The couple is grappling with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and depression, partly attributed to social determinants of health. The social challenges, including the sickness of Mariah's mother, contribute to her depression episodes. The work demands hardly created extra time for the family to relax and undertake therapeutic physical exercise that would ultimately limit the risk of chronic disease. For instance, Mariah is overweight, as evidenced by a body mass index of 34. This BMI indicates obesity which has a substantial risk of diabetes and hypertension. The family has unhealthy dietary habits, which account for uncontrolled diabetes in the case of Abel. The nutritional patterns of families and the overall community are considered a social determinant of health because it is deeply entrenched in the social-cultural aspect regarding food. Thus, these social determinants of health contribute to their prevalence of diseases, disorders, depressions, and health risk in the family X. These SDOF have impacted negatively on the overall wellness of the family, leading to uncontrolled chronic illness and increased risks of such diseases in the rest of the family members.
The Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) comprise all the non-medical factors that predict or influence health outcomes. SDOH are circumstances in which people live, were born, grew, work, and age, accompanied by systems, pressures, and forces that shape such conditions in daily life. Thus, SDOH is a broader, complex, and ill-defined condition that may determine an individu...
