Black Minority Health Status Compared to National Average
Introduction
Complex and historical issues have ethnically differentiated the quality of healthcare accessible to Americans. There are apparent disparities in the access to quality healthcare etched on ethnic lines disadvantaging minorities which lead to some racial and ethnic groups having worse health than others. According to CITATION Nat17 \l 1033 (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion , 2017), racial and ethnic minority populations often receive poorer quality of care and face more barriers in seeking care, including preventive care and chronic disease management, than do non-Hispanic whites. Typically, minority population bears a disproportionate burden of disease, injury, death, and disability which is resultant of multiple factors pertinent to their racial/ethnic lines. These factors include education, employment, and income which are socioeconomic factors, physical activity and alcohol intake which are related to lifestyle behaviors, educational and economic opportunities, racial/ethnic discrimination which are pertinent factors in social environment and access to preventive health-care services (e.g., cancer screening and vaccination).
Current Health Status of African Americans
The current health status of the Black American community is below national average. Black Community in American is still shackled in racial discrimination and thus they have been unable to fairly access enabling and empowering resources to liberate themselves from the historical injustices they have suffered. Their literacy levels are lower than their Caucasian counterparts and economically they are more disadvantaged. These factors have had a ripple effect on their health status as economically they have not developed a better safety net such as insurance and proper healthcare standards owing to the pertinent challenges they face. Literacy levels which have a significant disparity according to CITATION Uni13 \l 1033 (University of Minnesota, 2013), about 29 percent of U.S. adults (25 years of age or older) had at least a bachelor's degree, including 52 percent of Asian/Pacific Islander adults, 33 percent of White adults, 20 percent of Black adults. This educational disparity has had a similar pattern replicated in healthcare mainly stemming from the ripple effect of lower income and poor lifestyle which heaps more healthcare challenges.
Health Promotion as Defined by African Americans
Health promotion is a subjective concept to each minority group. For African Americans, it has been a subject of historical perspective in defining healthcare and health promotion. Due to racial discrimination, the community had been receiving poor healthcare with designated health facilities for them which were poorly equipped and maintained. Racism is still etched in social structure of the United States and facilities in places where Blacks are the majority places are still poorly equipped and maintained. Thus, Black American definition of health promotion has entailed approaches and strategies that aim at healthcare equity. The Black Community seeks health promotions which can impro...
