The study was conducted to investigate the impact of severe sepsis on patients and caregivers. To achieve its objectives, the study employed a qualitative exploratory study.
Problem Statement
Severe sepsis is a worse condition that may lead to death if not properly handled. In extreme conditions, the patients get admitted to ICU facilities. In the previous studies, scholars have been focusing on short-term effects of severe sepsis on patients and caregivers. Patients who experience severe sepsis face long-term physical and psychological effects that have a significant impact on their lives.
Purpose Statement
The goal of this study was to explore more details beyond those that have been provided by previous studies to provide insights into patient and caregivers' experiences on the treatment, recovery and long-term effects of severe sepsis.
Research Question
The study aimed at answering the following question: What are the subjective experiences and long-term impact of severe sepsis on patients and their caregivers?
Method
The study employed the qualitative study method to explore patients and survivors experiences of severe sepsis. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from the participants. Additionally, the article used the thematic analysis technique to analyze data. This technique uses inductive and deductive coding to identify, analyze and report patterns across a dataset.
