Introduction
Every research in the field of healthcare could be classified as quantitative, qualitative, or a mixture of both. Since each of these types has their advantages in producing results, thereby yielding useful results for different uses, different studies and journals apply them in different cases. In this article, the two studies that would be analyzed are those of the Sasso, et al., (2016) and Oh and Gastmans (2015), entitled Moral Distress in undergraduate Nursing Students and Moral Distress Experienced by Nurses: A Quantitative Literature Review, respectively. Both of these articles provide a fruitful discussion about the cause and effect of moral distress for both nurses and nursing students. However, as evident from the objectives and conclusions provided by the two studies, the author believed that the use of qualitative review had yielded a more applicable approach in treating moral distress, as compared to the quantitative method that focused on finding its causes. Further discussion would be provided in the succeeding sections.
Analysis
The author specifically chose these two topics for the following reasons: (1) the critical nature of moral distress concerning nurses’ performance and well-being and (2) difference in approach. Upon a close examination of the articles, it could be seen that the one written by Sasso et al. (2016), is qualitative due to the process that it followed through its inquiry. At first glance, the study would seem quantitative for it counted the number of quantitative vs. qualitative reviews in the topic of moral distress amongst nurses, from “157 articles published between 2004 and 2014” (Sasso, Bagnasco, Bianchi, Bressan, & Carnevale, 2016).
