Essential I: Scientific Underpinnings for Practice
The DNP program prepares nurse specialists to work in advance practice rather than merely being nurse researchers, as nurses are then committed to the practice career. Essential 1 highlights Scientific Underpinnings for Practice with emphasis on preparing nurses for academic practice. In the project I will focus on scientific evidence as the basis for understanding factors that affect the well being of individuals and a group of people. The nursing process affects the health status, since nurses need to understand how interaction with the environment affects the health status (Dolansky & Moore, 2013). For instance, among nurses experiencing compassion fatigue and burnout, there is a risk that this affects the quality of health care provision. I will also analyze data and evidence to improve practice, since changes are made when there is evidence to back the interventions. Integrating scientific theory with nursing skills is still a problem in nursing, but emphasis on evidence based practice bridges the gap between theory and practice (Swartz, 2014). When translating evidence on compassion fatigue and its effect on nurses, it is necessary to translate evidence from nursing research and psychology. The case for this is that it improves practice processes and advanced practice nurses then test reliable knowledge to translate evidence into practice. According to Burgermeister, Kwasky, & Groh (2012), one of the strategies in scientific foundation competencies is explaining theoretical perspectives that are applicable in interventions. Hence, the APRN is better placed to develop new practices based on integrating theory, research work and practice to advance knowledge (Zaccagnini, M., & White). I will seek to translate research to integrate change as the DNP relies on interdisciplinary knowledge to improve the nursing process.
